I’ll be honest, I was always skeptical of black bean burgers. I didn’t think it would be possible to achieve a burger-like experience with anything other than meat.

BEHOLD!

This recipe is a combination of basic ingredients that pack a big flavor punch and will even have your carnivore friends asking for seconds.

It’s a big promise, but try this recipe and let me know if you agree!

This post is all about the best spicy black bean burgers!

combining spicy black bean burger ingredients together

Add beans, corn, rice, egg, onion, garlic, and jalapeno to your mixing bowl. Add seasoning as desired! My suggested seasonings are paprika, chili powder, salt, and pepper, but you can use anything you would normally use to season a burger. For extra spicy burgers, feel free to add crushed red peppers or cayenne pepper!

mashing ingredients together

Time to mash!

Use a potato masher to mash all the ingredients together. The corn doesn’t mash very well, but the beans, rice, and other ingredients should combine nicely. You’ll know you’ve mashed enough when your burger looks like a paste – check out the picture above.

Now, its time to add the breadcrumbs! Feel free to add more breadcrumbs than the amount suggested in the recipe. The more breadcrumbs, the more dense your burger will be.

Form your mixture into patties!

Cooking spicy black bean burger

Pan fry in olive oil until both sides are nice and crispy. Don’t worry about cooking it through. Your objective is to get a nice crunchy crust on the top and bottom of the burger. Finish the burgers in the oven to make sure everything is warm throughout and the ingredients have combined nicely.

Add cheese and your favorite toppings and serve!
